Update on Enhancing Public Safety and Community Policing (January 2023)

Home Initiatives and Projects Enhancing Safety and Community Policing at UMD Update on Enhancing Public Safety and Community Policing (January 2023)

January 12, 2023

Dear Campus Community,

President Pines announced the path forward for the university's response to the recommendations of the Public Safety and Community Policing Task Force, including the establishment of a Campus Safety Advisory Council (CSAC). This work advances our commitment to help move our campus toward more collaborative and trusting partnerships between public safety officials and the university community. We are honored to serve as co-chairs of this new advisory council, whose members include a diverse group of students, faculty and staff representing units and departments across campus.

The council advises university leadership on matters related to implementing recommendations of the task force report. One meeting was held in Fall 2022; two meetings are planned for the spring 2023 semester. The council will report regularly to the president and cabinet.

We have launched an online dashboard to share updates on the university's response to each recommendation, including responsible university partners, action status and actions to date. The page includes information about the CSAC, including current membership.

As we work to fully address the recommendations, we are thankful for the strong support of President Pines and campus stakeholders, including the Division of Student Affairs and the Department of Public Safety.

Sincerely,

Carlo Colella
