Purple Line Construction Updates

Summary of Major Impacts - Spring 2025

The university worked with the Maryland Department of Transportation, the project owner, to accelerate major construction in the core of campus, which is now complete. As a result, Purple Line construction will be much less impactful in the heart of campus this academic year than it was in the previous year. As minor construction continues in the campus core and major construction continues in other areas, watch for the following impacts this semester:

  • Road Closures on Rossborough Lane (see maps):
    • West of Baltimore Avenue the road is closed (near Turner Hall and Rossborough Inn)
    • East of Baltimore Avenue, the road is closed to Diamondback Drive (near Ritchie Coliseum)
    • There are ADA-compliant pedestrian detours
  • Lane Closures on Baltimore Avenue at the Intersection of Rossborough Lane (see maps):
    • Two lanes and one sidewalk of Baltimore Avenue are closed from Hotel Drive to Fraternity Row
    • One lane of travel is open in each direction
    • There is an ADA-compliant pedestrian detour
  • Traffic Pattern Adjustment on Campus Drive East of Baltimore Avenue (see map):
    • Temporary shift results in a tighter turn for motorists
    • Stop signs have been added in both directions of travel (near the Leonardtown Apartments)

Campus Drive Crosswalk Closure - 4.15.25-4.17.25

Starting on or about Tuesday, April 15, the Purple Line contractor will close the Campus Drive crosswalk east of the Regents Drive intersection from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., for approximately 3 days. See map for details and pedestrian detour.

Alumni Drive Partial Road Closure - 4.14.25

On or about Monday, April 14, the Purple Line contractor will close a portion of Alumni Drive south of Union Drive (near Knight Hall), from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for construction activities. See map for details and vehicle detour.

Regents Drive Lane & Sidewalk Closure - 4.12.25

On or about Saturday, April 12, the Purple Line contractor will close the northbound lane and the adjacent sidewalk of Regents Drive, between Campus Drive and Fieldhouse Drive (near the John S. Toll Physics Building), from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., for construction activities. 

Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions. See map for details and pedestrian detour.

Regents Drive Lane & Sidewalk Closure - 3.29.25

On or about Saturday, March 29, the Purple Line contractor will close the northbound lane and the adjacent sidewalk of Regents Drive between Campus Drive and Fieldhouse Drive (near the John S. Toll Physics Building) from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., for construction activities. 

Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions. See map for details and pedestrian detour.

Alumni Drive Partial Road Closure - 3.26.25-4.4.25

Starting on or about Wednesday, March 26, the Purple Line contractor will close a portion of Alumni Drive south of Union Drive (near Knight Hall), from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for approximately 1 week. See map for details and vehicle detour.

Regents Drive Sidewalk Closure - 3.18.25-3.19.25

Starting on or about Tuesday, March 18, the Purple Line contractor will close the sidewalk on the east side of Regents Drive sidewalk between Campus Drive and Fieldhouse Drive (near the John S. Toll Physics Building) for approximately 2 days for construction activities. See the attached map for details and pedestrian detour.

Campus Dr. Lane Closures East of Baltimore Ave. - 3.17.25-8.29.25

Starting on or about Monday, March 17, through the end of August 2025, the Purple Line contractor will conduct periodic lane closures on Campus Drive between Baltimore Avenue and River Road (near the WMATA Metrorail station) from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. 

Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions. See map for details.

Periodic Lane Closures in Core of Campus - 3.17.25-8.29.25

Starting on or about Monday, March 17, through the end of August 2025, the Purple Line contractor will conduct periodic lane closures on Campus Drive between Regents Drive (near Symons Hall) and Alumni Drive (in Lots 1/Z) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Traffic will be maintained in both directions.

Watch for shifting construction activity and detour signs. See map for details.

Periodic Lane Closures near UMGC - 3.17.25-8.29.25

Starting on or about Monday, March 17, through the end of August 2025, the Purple Line contractor will conduct periodic lane closures from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the following locations:

  • Campus Drive between Presidential Drive and Adelphi Road (near UMGC)
  • Adelphi Road between Campus Drive and University Boulevard (near UMGC)
  • University Boulevard between Adelphi Road and Temple Street (near Graduate Hills Apartments)

One lane of travel will remain open at all locations. See map for details.

Baltimore Avenue Lane & Sidewalk Closures - 3.17.25-5.19.25

Starting on or about Monday, March 17, through Monday, May 19, the Purple Line contractor will close two lanes and one sidewalk of Baltimore Avenue from Hotel Drive to Fraternity Row to facilitate construction of the tracks across the roadway at the intersection of Rossborough Lane. One lane of travel will be open in each direction. 

Allow additional time for travel through this area. See map for details and pedestrian detours.

Campus Drive Lane Closure - 3.13.25

On or about Thursday, March 13, the Purple Line contractor will close one westbound lane of Campus Drive between Adelphi Road and Presidential Drive (near UMGC), from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., for construction activities. One lane of westbound travel will remain open. See map for details.

Union Drive Crosswalk & Lane Closure - 3.13.25

On or about Thursday, March 13, the Purple Line contractor will close the eastbound lane of Union Drive at Alumni Drive, and the adjacent crosswalk, from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., for construction activities. Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions. Alumni Drive Lane Closure - 3.12.25

On or about Wednesday, March 12, the Purple Line contractor will close the northbound lane of Alumni Drive south of Union Drive (near Knight Hall), from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., for construction activities. Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions. See map for details.

Lane Closure near Leonardtown Apartments - 3.10.25-3.14.25

Starting on or about Monday, March 10, the Purple Line contractor will close one lane of the connector road between Rossborough Lane and Yale Avenue (near the Leonardtown Apartments), from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for approximately 2 days. Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions. 

Additionally, 3 adjacent parking spaces in Lot K3 will be closed for approximately 5 days for related construction activities. See map for details.

Alumni Drive Partial Road Closure - 3.10.25-3.11.25

Starting on or about Monday, March 10, the Purple Line contractor will close a portion of Alumni Drive south of Union Drive (near Knight Hall), from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for approximately 2 days. See map for details and vehicle detour.

Lane Closures near UMGC - 3.10.25-3.14.25

Starting on or about Monday, March 10, the Purple Line contractor will close one lane of traffic from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for approximately 5 days, at the following locations:

  • Campus Drive westbound between Presidential Drive and UMGC
  • University Boulevard westbound between Adelphi Road and Temple Street
  • University Boulevard eastbound between Tulane Drive and Campus Drive

One lane of traffic will remain open at all locations. Allow additional time for travel. See map for details.

Campus Drive Lane Closure - 3.7.25

On or about Friday, March 3, the Purple Line contractor will close one westbound lane of Campus Drive between Adelphi Road and Presidential Drive (near UMGC), from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for construction activities. One lane of westbound travel will remain open. See map for details.

Union Drive Crosswalk & Lane Closure - 3.6.25-3.10.25

Starting on or about Thursday, March 6, the Purple Line contractor will close the eastbound lane of Union Drive at Alumni Drive , and the adjacent crosswalk, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for approximately 3 days, excluding the weekend. Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions. Sidewalk Closure at Campus & Regents Intersection - 3.5.25-3.6.25

Starting on or about Wednesday, March 5 the Purple Line contractor will close the sidewalk northeast of the Campus Drive/Regents Drive intersection, from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., for approximately 2 days.  

The work zone will extend partially into the roadway but all lanes of travel will remain open.  Drivers should proceed with caution when travelling through the intersection.

Campus Drive Traffic Pattern Adjustment - 3.4.25-8.29.25

Starting on or about March 4, the Purple Line contractor will adjust the traffic pattern on Campus Drive east of Baltimore Avenue (near the Leonardtown apartments) for approximately 6 months. 

This temporary shift will result in a tighter turn for motorists, so stop signs will be added in both directions of travel. Allow additional time for travel through this area. See map for details.

Campus Drive Lane Closure - 3.3.25-3.14.25

Starting on or about Monday, March 3, the Purple Line contractor will close one eastbound lane of Campus Drive between Adelphi Road and Presidential Drive (near UMGC), from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for approximately 2 weeks. One lane of eastbound travel will remain open. See map for details.

Daytime Lane Closures - 2.24.25-2.28.25

Starting on or about Monday, February 24, the Purple Line contractor will perform daytime lane closures from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for approximately 1 week at the following locations:

  • Campus Drive between University Boulevard and Adelphi Road (near the Graduate Hills Apartments)
  • Campus Drive between the UMGC campus and the Campus Drive/Alumni Drive/Mowatt Lane traffic circle
  • Rossborough Lane between Diamondback Drive and Yale Avenue
  • Campus Drive between Baltimore Avenue and the Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute 

Flaggers will maintain traffic flows. Allow extra time for travel through these areas. See maps for details.

Campus Drive Overnight Lane Closures - 2.17.25-2.25.25

Starting on or about Monday, February 17, the Purple Line contractor will be closing the eastbound lane of Campus Drive, near the Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day, for approximately 1 week. Flaggers will maintain eastbound and westbound traffic.  See map for details.

Campus Drive Crosswalk Closure - 1.31.25

On Friday, January 31, the Purple Line contractor will close the crosswalk on the east side of the Campus Drive/Regents Drive intersection, from approximately 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., for construction activities. See map for details and pedestrian detour.

Baltimore Avenue Lane & Sidewalk Closures - 1.27.25-3.28.25

The Purple Line contractor will continue conducting ongoing lane closures on Baltimore Avenue at the intersection of Rossborough Lane on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through the end of March. At least one northbound lane and one southbound lane will be open at all times. 

Additionally, the contractor will continue conducting alternating closures of the Baltimore Avenue sidewalks between Frat Row and Hotel Drive.  As a reminder, the Baltimore Avenue crosswalk at Rossborough Lane is closed indefinitely.

Campus Drive Sidewalk Closures - 1.15.25-2.26.25

Starting on or about Wednesday, January 15, the Purple Line contractor will close the Campus Drive sidewalks between The University Baptist Church and the Mowatt Lane traffic circle as follows:

  • North sidewalk will be closed starting on or about Wednesday, January 15, for approximately 2 weeks
  • South sidewalk will be closed starting on or about Thursday, January 30, for approximately 3 weeks
  • North sidewalk will be closed starting on or about Wednesday, February 19, for approximately 1 week

Periodic Campus Lane Closures - 1.15.25-1.23.25

Starting on or about Wednesday, January 15, the Purple Line contractor will perform periodic lane closures from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for approximately 1 week in the locations listed below to complete underground testing. Flaggers and traffic control measures will be utilized to maintain traffic flow in both directions. See map for details.

  • Campus Drive between Regents Drive (near Symons Hall) and the Benjamin Building
  • Rossborough Lane east of Diamondback Drive
