Purple Line Construction Updates
Major Impacts - Fall 2025
The university worked with the Maryland Department of Transportation, the project owner, to accelerate major construction in the core of campus, which is now complete. As minor construction continues in the campus core and major construction continues in other areas, watch for the following impacts this semester:
- Road Closures on Rossborough Lane (see maps):
- West of Baltimore Avenue the road is closed (near Turner Hall and Rossborough Inn)
- East of Baltimore Avenue, the road is closed to Diamondback Drive (near Ritchie Coliseum)
- There are ADA-compliant pedestrian detours

Campus Drive Lane Closures near the M - 9.15.25-9.19.25
Starting on or about Monday, September 15, the Purple Line contractor will close the eastbound lane, and adjacent sidewalk, of Campus Drive between Regents Drive and the M from 9:15 a.m. until 4 p.m., for approximately 3 days. Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions.
On or about Thursday, September 18, the contractor will close the right-hand lane of Campus Drive westbound, and the adjacent sidewalk, from 9:15 a.m. until 4 p.m., for approximately 2 days. Drivers will use the middle lane as the detour.

Periodic Lane Closures - Core of Campus - 9.15.25-12.22.25
Starting on or about Monday, September 15, through the end of December 2025, the Purple Line contractor will conduct periodic lane closures on Campus Drive between Regents Drive (near Symons Hall) and Alumni Drive (in Lots 1/Z) from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The lane closures will be performed in segments, and traffic will be maintained in both directions.
These closures will not occur when major events are scheduled on campus. Watch for shifting construction activity and signage. See map for details.
Campus Drive Lane Closure with Flagging - 9.8.25-9.12.25
Starting on or about Monday, September 8, the Purple Line contractor will close the eastbound lane of Campus Drive between Regents Drive and the M from 9:15 a.m. until 4 p.m., for approximately 5 days. Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions. Watch for shifting constructing activity. See map for details.
Campus Drive Lane Closure - 9.8.25-9.12.25
Starting on or about Monday, September 8, the Purple Line contractor will close the eastbound lane of Campus Drive between the Edward St. John Learning & Teaching Center and Symons Hall from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m., for approximately 5 days. Vehicles will use the median as a detour around the work area.

Periodic Lane Closures – East of Campus Core - 9.2.25-10.31.25
Starting on or about Tuesday, September 2, through the end of October, the Purple Line contractor will conduct periodic lane closures on Campus Drive between Baltimore Avenue and River Road (near the WMATA Metrorail station) from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions. These closures will not occur when major events are scheduled on campus. Watch for shifting construction activity. See map for details
Periodic Lane Closures – West of Campus Core - 9.2.25-10.31.25
Starting on or about Tuesday, September 2, through the end of October, the Purple Line contractor will conduct periodic lane closures from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the following locations:
- Campus Drive between Presidential Drive and Adelphi Road (near UMGC)
- University Boulevard between Adelphi Road and Temple Street (near Graduate Hills Apartments)
- Adelphi Road between Tulane Drive and University Boulevard (near Graduate Hills Apartments and UMGC)
One lane of travel will remain open at all locations. These closures will not occur when major events are scheduled on campus. Watch for shifting construction activity. See map for details.
Lane & Sidewalk Closures on Rossborough Lane - 9.2.25-9.19.25
Starting on or about Tuesday, September 2, the Purple Line contractor will perform shifting lane and sidewalk closures on Rossborough Lane between Diamondback Drive and the Yale Avenue connector road from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m., for approximately 3 weeks.
Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions. Watch for shifting constructing activity. See map for details and pedestrian detours.
Overhead Wire Installation - 8.21.25
On or about Thursday, August 21, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., the Purple Line contractor will install overhead wires, which will require rolling lane closures between Alumni Drive (near Knight Hall) and the Yale Avenue connector road (near the Leonardtown Apartments). Traffic will be maintained in both directions. Additionally, the contractor will completely stop traffic for up to 15 minutes at the following locations:
- Campus Drive/Regents Drive Intersection: approximately 10:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.
- Baltimore Avenue/Rossborough Lane Intersection: approximately 11:15 a.m. and 3:45 p.m.
There also will be traffic stoppages for up to 5 minutes at other locations along the track alignment. Provisions will be in place to allow for unfettered emergency vehicle access at all locations.

Campus Drive Overnight Roadway Restriping - 8.20.25-8.22.25
Starting on or about Wednesday, August 20, Purple Line contractor will perform overnight roadway restriping on Campus Drive between Regents Drive (near Symons Hall) and Alumni Drive (in Lots 1/Z) from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day, for approximately 2 nights.
Construction vehicles will be positioned in the median so now impacts to travel lanes are anticipated. Watch for shifting construction activity (see map).
Lane Closures on Library Lane & Union Lane - 8.18.25-8.26.25
Starting on or about Monday, August 18, the Purple Line contractor will conduct lane closures on Library Lane (near the University Health Center) and Union Lane (near the Stamp Student Union) from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., for approximately 1 week. Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions. See map for details.
Campus Drive Lane Closure - 8.18.25-8.22.25
Starting on or about Monday, August 18, the Purple Line contractor will conduct a daily lane closure of westbound Campus Drive between Presidential Drive and Championship Lane from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for approximately 5 days. Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions. See map for details.
Baltimore Avenue Lane & Sidewalk Closure - 8.18.25-8.19.25
Starting on or about Monday, August 18, the Purple Line contractor will close the right-hand lane of northbound Baltimore Avenue between Hotel Drive and Fraternity Row, from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., for approximately 2 days. The adjacent sidewalk will also be closed. See map for details and pedestrian detour.
Campus Drive – Overnight Roadway Restriping- 8.11.25-8.16.25
Starting on or about Monday, August 11, Purple Line contractor will perform overnight roadway restriping on Campus Drive between Regents Drive (near Symons Hall) and Alumni Drive (in Lots 1/Z) from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day, for approximately 5 nights.

Starting on or about Monday, August 11, the Purple Line contractor will conduct shifting lane closures for eastbound and westbound Campus Drive between the M and Martin Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for approximately 5 days. Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions. Watch for shifting construction activity (see map).
Lane Closures at Campus Drive & Regents Drive Intersection - 8.9.25
On or about Saturday, August 9, the Purple Line contractor will conduct shifting lane and crosswalk closures at the Campus Drive and Regents Drive intersection from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to complete pavement markings.
Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in all directions. Watch for shifting construction activity, follow pedestrian detour signage, and allow for additional time when travelling through the area (see map).
Union Drive Lane Closure - 8.4.25-8.11.25
Starting on or about Monday, August 4, the Purple Line contractor will close the eastbound lane of Union Drive between Alumni Drive and Knight Hall, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., for approximately 1 week. Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions (see map).
Library Lane Lane Closures - 8.4.25-8.8.25
Starting on or about Monday, August 4, the Purple Line contractor will conduct alternating lane closures of the northbound and southbound lane of Library Lane, near the University Health Center. The lane closures will occur daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., for approximately 5 days. Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions (see map).
Lane Closures at Campus Drive & Regents Drive Intersection - 8.2.25
On or about Saturday, August 2, the Purple Line contractor will conduct shifting lane and crosswalk closures at the Campus Drive and Regents Drive intersection from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. to complete pavement markings.
Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in all directions. Watch for shifting construction activity, follow pedestrian detour signage, and allow for additional time when travelling through the area (see map).
Traffic Signal Activation at Campus Drive & Regents Drive - 7.28.25-7.31.25
Starting on or about Monday, July 28, the Purple Line contractor will activate the flashing red mode for the traffic signals at the intersection of Campus Drive and Regents Drive. Motorists are to continue to treat this intersection as a 4-way stop.
On or about Thursday, July 31, the contractor will conduct shifting lane and crosswalk closures from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to make the traffic signals fully operational. Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in all directions during the closures. Watch for shifting construction activity, follow pedestrian detour signage, and allow for additional time when travelling through the area (see map).
Lane Closure on Rossborough Lane - 7.23.25
On or about Wednesday, July 23, the Purple Line contractor will close eastbound Rossborough Lane between Diamondback Drive and the Yale Avenue connector road from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., for inspection activities.
Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions. See map for details.
Lane Closures on Baltimore Avenue - 7.22.25
On or about Tuesday, July 22, the Purple Line contractor will close one lane each of northbound and southbound Baltimore Avenue between Hotel Drive and Fraternity Row from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., for inspection activities. One lane of travel in each direction will be open at all times.
Watch for shifting construction activity and allow extra time for travel through the area. See map for details.
Sidewalk, Bike Path & Crosswalk Closures at Campus Dr. & Regents Dr. Intersection - 7.16.25-8.6.25
Starting on Wednesday, July 16, the Purple Line contractor will close the sidewalk, bike path, and 2 adjacent crosswalks at the southwest corner of the Campus Drive and Regents Drive intersection (near Symons Hall), for approximately 3 weeks. See map for details and pedestrian detour.
Electrical Outage at Toll Physics - 7.11.25
On Friday, July 11, the Purple Line contractor will perform an electrical outage at John S. Toll Physics Building from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. The purpose of this outage is to connect electrical service to new light poles and traffic signals.
Impacts are as follows (Toll Physics Wing 1 & 2, Southwest portion of the building only):
Lighting, electrical outlets, small appliances connected to 120/208 volts power, HVAC system, CCMS, elevators, building access card readers. Exit lights along the path of egress such corridors, stairways, entrances, electrical outlets in the labs connected to the emergency system, fire alarm system, and the UPS in room 0205J will not be affected.
Plug critical equipment into emergency receptacles as necessary.
Lane Closures on Library Lane - 7.7.25-7.11.25
Starting on or about Monday, July 7, the Purple Line contractor will conduct alternating lane closures of the northbound and southbound lane of Library Lane near the University Health Center. The lane closures will occur daily from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for approximately 5 days. Flaggers will maintain traffic flow in both directions. See map for details.
Campus Drive Lane & Sidewalk Closures - 6.30.25-8.8.25
Starting on or about Monday, June 30, the Purple Line contractor will close the right-hand lane of Campus Drive westbound, and the adjacent sidewalk, at the intersection of Presidential Drive (near The University Baptist Church) for approximately 6 weeks. One lane of westbound traffic will remain open. See map for details and pedestrian detour.
Regents Drive Lane & Sidewalk Closures - 6.11.25-6.13.25
Starting on or about Wednesday, June 11, the Purple Line contractor will close the northbound lane and the adjacent sidewalk of Regents Drive between Campus Drive and the John S. Toll Physics Building from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for approximately 2 days.
