Summary of Major Impacts - Winter 2024-2025

The university worked with the Maryland Department of Transportation, the project owner, to accelerate major construction in the core of campus, which is now complete. As a result, Purple Line construction will be much less impactful in the heart of campus this academic year than it was in the previous year. As minor construction continues in the campus core and major construction continues in other areas, watch for the following impacts this winter:

• Adjusted Traffic Pattern at Campus Drive & Adelphi Road Intersection (near UMGC): No left turns allowed from Adelphi Road onto Campus Drive from either direction, and no left turns allowed from Campus Drive westbound onto Adelphi Road southbound (see map).
• Road Closures on Rossborough Lane:
  • West of Baltimore Avenue the road is closed (near Turner Hall and Rossborough Inn (see map).
  • East of Baltimore Avenue, the road is closed from Baltimore Avenue to Diamondback Drive (near Ritchie Coliseum (see map). 
  • There are long-term, ADA-compliant pedestrian detours (see map). 
• Lane Closures on Baltimore Avenue at the Intersection of Rossborough Lane: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. At least one northbound lane and one southbound lane will be open at all times (see map).
• Lane Closure on Campus Drive near Metro Garage: Eastbound lane closure between the underpass and River Road. Traffic signals will control alternating eastbound and westbound traffic flow (see map).

Campus Drive Sidewalk Closures - 1.15.25-2.13.25

Starting on or about Wednesday, January 15, the Purple Line contractor will close the Campus Drive sidewalks between The University Baptist Church and the Mowatt Lane traffic circle as follows:

• North sidewalk will be closed starting on or about Wednesday, January 15 for approximately 2 weeks
• South sidewalk will be closed starting on or about Thursday, January 30, for approximately 2 weeks

Periodic Campus Lane Closures - 1.15.25-1.23.25

Starting on or about Wednesday, January 15, the Purple Line contractor will perform periodic lane closures from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for approximately 1 week in the locations listed below to complete underground testing. Flaggers and traffic control measures will be utilized to maintain traffic flow in both directions. See map for details.

• Campus Drive between Regents Drive (near Symons Hall) and the Benjamin Building
• Rossborough Lane east of Diamondback Drive

Campus Drive Lane Closure Near Metro Garage - 12.18.24-1.22.25

Starting on or about Wednesday, December 18, through January 22, the Purple Line contractor will close the eastbound lane of Campus Drive near the WMATA Metrorail garage between the underpass and River Road. Traffic signals will be used to control alternating eastbound and westbound traffic flow. The entrance to the Metrorail garage has been temporarily relocated. See map for details.

Periodic Campus Lane Closures - 12.16.24-1.7.25

Starting on or about Monday, December 16, the Purple Line contractor will perform periodic lane closures from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for approximately 3 weeks within the locations listed below. Flaggers will direct traffic to maintain traffic flow in both directions. See map for details.

• Campus Drive between Regents Drive (near Symons Hall) and Alumni Drive (in Lots 1/Z)
• Rossborough Lane east of Diamondback Drive

Baltimore Avenue Sidewalk Closures - 12.9.24-1.24.25

Starting on or about Monday, December 9, the Purple Line contractor will close the Baltimore Avenue sidewalks between Frat Row and Hotel Drive as follows:

• East side of Baltimore Avenue will be closed Monday, December 9, through Friday, December 20
• West side of Baltimore Avenue will be closed Monday, December 23, through Friday, January 24

Campus Crosswalk Striping - 12.4.24-12.13.24

Starting on or about Wednesday, December 4, the Purple Line contractor will perform crosswalk striping from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for approximately one week at the locations listed below. Flaggers will direct traffic. See map for details. 

• Campus Drive/Regents Drive intersection (near Symons Hall and the Geology Building)
• Campus Drive/Union Lane intersection (near Stamp Student Union and St. Mary’s Hall)
• Symons Hall service lot entrance

Campus Drive Sidewalk & Bike Path Closure - 11.25.24-11.27.24

Starting on or about Monday, November 25, the Purple Line contractor will close the Campus Drive sidewalk and bike path between Library Lane and the University Health Center main entrance for approximately 3 days. The main entrance will remain open. See the attached map for details and detour. 

Baltimore Avenue Sidewalk Closures - 11.18.24-12.6.24

Starting on or about Monday, November 18, the Purple Line contractor will close the Baltimore Avenue sidewalks between Frat Row and Hotel Drive as follows:

• East side of Baltimore Avenue will be closed Monday, November 18, through Monday, December 2
• West side of Baltimore Avenue will be closed Wednesday, December 4, through Friday, December 6

Overnight Traffic Controls - 11.12.24-11.16.24

The Purple Line contractor will conduct overnight traffic control operations at the Campus Drive/Regents Drive and Union Drive/Alumni Drive intersections at the dates and times listed below. Flaggers will direct traffic. See map for details.

• Tuesday, November 12 through Thursday, November 14, from 7 p.m. each evening to 6 a.m. the following morning
• Saturday, November 16, from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m.

Campus Drive Sidewalk & Crosswalk Closure - 11.6.24 & 11.8.24

The Purple Line contractor will close the crosswalk on the east side of the Campus Drive/Regents Drive
intersection, and the adjacent Campus Drive sidewalk, for approximately 3 hours on the following dates:

• Wednesday, November 6 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
• Friday, November 8 from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Regents Drive Sidewalk Closure - 11.4.24-11.6.24

Starting on or about Monday, November 4, the Purple Line contractor will close a portion of the sidewalk on the east side of Regents Drive near the Toll Physics Building from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. for approximately 3 days. See map for details and detour.

Baltimore Avenue Lane Closures - 10.21.24-1.24.25

Starting on or about Monday, October 21, the Purple Line contractor will conduct lane closures on Baltimore Avenue at the intersection of Rossborough Lane from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday for approximately 3 months. At least one northbound lane and one southbound lane will be open at all times. As a reminder, the Baltimore Avenue crosswalk at Rossborough Lane is closed long-term. 

Watch for shifting construction activity and allow for additional travel time. See map for details. 

Traffic Pattern Adjustments at the Campus Drive & Regents Drive Intersection –  Starting 10.15.24

To improve the functionality and safety of the Campus Drive and Regents Drive intersection, the Purple Line contractor will implement a traffic-pattern adjustment starting on or about Tuesday, October 15. 

The number of vehicle travel lanes through the intersection will be reduced; however, all turning movements will still be allowed. Use caution when traveling through the intersection and see the attached map for reference. 

Rossborough Lane Crosswalk Closure – 10.9.24-10.17.24

Starting on or about Wednesday, October 9, the Purple Line contractor will close the crosswalk and a portion of sidewalk on the west side of the Rossborough Lane and Baltimore Avenue intersection (near Turner Hall) for approximately one week. The adjacent bus stop will remain open and accessible from the north. See map for details and pedestrian detour.

Campus Drive & Adelphi Road Intersection Adjusted Traffic Pattern – 10.8.24-4.8.25

Starting on or about Tuesday, October 8, the Purple Line contractor will change the traffic pattern at the Campus Drive and Adelphi Road intersection near UMGC for approximately 6 months. The following changes will be implemented:

• Adelphi Road: No left turns will be allowed from Adelphi Road onto Campus Drive from either direction.
• Campus Drive: Westbound vehicles on Campus Drive will no longer be able to turn left onto Adelphi Road to go southbound.

Travelers approaching from the north should use the campus entrances at Paint Branch Drive, Stadium Drive or Baltimore Avenue (see map).

Sidewalk Closure near the Mitchell Building – 10.7.24-10.18.24

Starting on or about Monday, October 7, the Purple Line contractor will close the sidewalk between the “M” and the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. Building for approximately 2 weeks. A temporary sidewalk will be provided adjacent to the closure. See map for details.
